April 2012

15 April: RHS Britain in Bloom had their first ever National Gardening Week. Todmorden in Bloom, assisted by local children, joined thousands of other groups throughout the country in celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee by planting wildflower seeds.

9th April: Easter Saturday, the group braved the bitter cold once more to man a outdoor market stall promoting its cause. Luckily peoples hearts were much warmer than the weather. There was lots of very positive feedback from residents and visitors alike who gave very generously. Once more we offered wildflower seeds for a minimum donation. The donations will help pay for the summer planting in the our 32 barrier baskets

4th April
:  Winter returned on Yorkshire in Bloom judging day. After speaking to Steve at Centre Vale , who simply said " well you can see the Polyanthus flowers above the snow " we decided to go ahead, not knowing that the roads from Leeds were either closed or virtually impassable. Christine Stewart and Steve Bumby struggled to get to Todmorden in atrocious conditions. The group are very
appreciative of the judges efforts to make it on the due date. The tour of the town went as planned if not rather quickly in the freezing cold. Madeline at The Vintner then had a lovely fire and finger buffet waiting for our return.

March 2012

Bulbs are in bloom throughout the town. This will be working month  Yorkshire in Bloom judges will visitTodmorden on the 4th April. Please help us to get the town ship shape for residents and visitors alike. Contact me if you can help in any way

December 2011
Todmorden in Bloom were involved in many of the towns Christmas activities. They supported The Business Association in The Twelve Days of Todmas and the Indoor Market Traders.

We decorated the stall in the Indoor Market with huge silver icecicles and flowers.

Our wreath making session was very well attended. Folks soon picked up the new skill
and went home proudly clutching their wreaths. The profit, will go towards our summer planting programme.Thank you to all who took part.

Kidsfest was teeming with children as usual, the Town Hall was packed.
We/they produced what seemed like hundreds of Christmas arrangements to take home. The local paper did comment that the Todmorden in Bloom stall had the most customers!

Unfortunately we became too involved in the activities to take photos!

October 2011
Our 32 Barrier Baskets and15 large tubs have been cleaned and re planted with winter bedding. Hundreds of daffodil and crocus bulbs have been planted on the canal towpath between Lever Street and Library Lock. Cuttings have been taken from various gardens in the town centre for propagation over the winter.
What a picture Todmorden will be in the spring when the bulbs in the Peace and Rotary Gardens, barrier baskets ,tubs and canal bank all pop up like magic.

A great event in our calendar, the Garden Competition Award night. Over 50 people watched a power point presentation of their gardens and received awards and certificates from the Mayor. This was followed by a good natter, plant swap and supper. Todmorden Town Council kindly supported the event.

September 2011
Jean and Norman attended the Yorkshire in Bloom presentations in Harrogate. Todmorden in Bloom were delighted to receive a silver gilt award

We decorated the Unitarian Church for the Harvest Festival. Folks made Lavender Nosegays and ate our friendship cake. The Lavender was gathered when we trimmed our flower bed edges earlier in the month.

August 2011
The upgraded canal towpath and Lever Street area was officially opened by Todmorden and Calderdale Mayors on Saturday 20th August. Todmorden in Bloom had a great day assisting a newly formed neighborhood group to plant new wall top containers .They also had a stall where Sheila and Ann showed visitors how to make little posies. The area is now a perfect spot to sit in the town centre

July 2011
Posters created by children at the Agricultural Show have been judged. The winner was  presented with her prize by the Yorkshire in Bloom Judges when they visited Castle Hill School. The posters are currently on display in Todmorden Indoor Market on The Todmorden in Bloom stall, near the coffee stall.

Yorkshire in Bloom Judges Beatrice Myers and Lee Senior visited Todmorden on Friday 8th July. Blooms Trees and Grass were clean and green, well washed by the persistent Pennine rain. This did not affect the proceedings and all went well. Madeline at The Vintners provided us with a lovely afternoon tea to round off what had been a busy but very enjoyable day.We now await the results.
In the meantime please keep up the good work.

Todmorden in Bloom were part of a joint application for over £44 ,000
from the "Jubilee Peoples Millions", to increase the awareness of the importance of bees and to educate people how to go about saving them
The bid was successful and we received the £44,700. Thanks to all who voted

We have a stall in Todmorden Indoor Market with a fun bee display, Please pop in to see it.

18th June.
What a busy week we have had planting the annuals, promoting the Bee campaign and attending The Agricultural Show.
We had a great day at the show, with our Farmyard Floral Display. Complete with Pink Floral Pig. The 2011 Garden Competition was launched the only problem we encountered  was that folks from Lancashire wanted to enter their gardens! The children had fun making posters to go in shop windows and we found new friends and members. See the photo's by clicking the photo section on left of this page

Big plant week-end went well. We planted up the 32 barrier baskets.
The weather was kind to us ,it kept fine for the planting and then
light rain!

Todmorden in Bloom are part of a joint project with Todmorden Town Council , Bee  Credible Incredible Edible Todmorden and Todmorden Pride to create a Green Route around the town. On Saturday 21st May they maned a stall at an exhibition explaining to towns people and visitors what the project is about and asking what they would like to see. There were hundreds of folks interested, many signed up to give time to take the very ambitious project forward.

Summer is just around the corner and we are preparing to re plant the baskets and containers in the town. Many of the containers are in need of a good wash and coat of paint. Norman and Rick are renovating the three huge Market Planters.

Todmorden in Bloom decorated the fabulous grade 1 listed Unitarian Church ready for "The Wedding" . Upper Calder Charities Assist and  Friends of The Unitarian Church put on a great event. The atmosphere in the magnificent Gothic Revival Church was magic.
Everyone dressed in their finest, hats, tiaras and flowers. We watched the service live on a giant screen, sang along with the hymns and toasted the happy couple as they left the Abbey with a glass of champagne.Just a perfect day!

  • Canal Towpath

The towpath between Fielden Wharf and the Medical Centre has gone through a major renovation. The work was funded by Calderdale and Todmorden Councils. Rather than the daffodils be destroyed during the works they were picked by TIB and given to local care homes. Todmorden in Bloom will liaise with the council and help to replant the path in the Autumn

  • Sheila tidies up

This is what the hundreds of bulbs planted in the shape of the Rotary Logo, looked like in the garden at the end of the Central Methodist. Todmorden in Bloom helped The Rotary plant the mauve bulbs to commemorate the Rotary's program to eradicate Polio. The bulbs are now dying back ready for their new display next Spring.

  • Clean up a "Grot Spot"

There are lots of corners in the town that could do with spruce up. Pick up a bag ,a pair of gloves and attack the debris. Anywhere you see it.

  • Our Gingerbread House

Todmorden in Bloom volunteers constructed a Gingerbread House for the Mayors Christmas Competition. With a colourful front garden. raised veg beds out back and a outdoor loo complete with seedum roof. A forest and the odd robin completed the scene. Alas the house is no longer, it was eaten in record time at Christmas.

  • Prince Charles visit

In May 2010 His Royal Highness Prince Charles visited Todmorden. Members of Todmorden in Bloom donned flowery gloves at the side of the Butterfly Garden and eagerly awaited the introduction.

Thank you Andrew
What a fantastic job Andrew does. He fills these bags every day. Imagin what our town would look like without folks like him.
